From Wimbledon to the US Open: Creating a Seamless Editorial Experience for Touch of Gold

Touch of Gold is an official Rolex retailer based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, offering a curated selection of luxury timepieces. As part of their ongoing partnership with Rolex, they regularly publish event-based content tied to global sporting moments like Wimbledon and the US Open. To support this initiative, they needed a visually rich and reusable article format that aligned with Rolex’s brand standards.

Background & Challenge

The client was operating on Shopify’s Online Store 1.0 and didn’t have a flexible template they could reuse for each Rolex event. Initially, they asked us to build a custom article template for the Wimbledon feature. They provided high-fidelity mockups for mobile and desktop, but due to the tight turnaround before the campaign launch, we couldn’t fully upgrade their blog to Online Store 2.0 in time. We had to work within the constraints of 1.0 and still deliver a premium, branded experience. To add to the complexity, the mockups were sent as JPEGs, so we couldn’t extract or copy the content and had to enter it manually.

  • Their Goal

The goal was to create a custom, on-brand article template for the Wimbledon feature that would serve as a foundation for future Rolex-related content. The design needed to reflect the prestige of the Rolex brand and be structured in a way that made it easy to replicate for other events like the US Open.

  • Our Solution

We hand-coded a custom article template using HTML and added it to the Shopify theme as a new template called “rolex.” Since the site was still on Online Store 1.0, we couldn’t rely on Shopify’s drag-and-drop editor. Instead, we built flexibility directly into the template by creating structured sections for titles, images, videos, and text blocks. This setup made it easy for the client to manage and update content going forward. We also made sure the layout could be reused for future events in theWorld of Rolexseries, so the team wouldn’t need to start from scratch each time. To keep things efficient, we asked for the content in a clean text document, which helped speed up the build and avoid errors.

Results That Moved the Needle

The Wimbledon blog launched on time and aligned perfectly with the Rolex brand. Its success led to a follow-up request to help build out the US Open feature using the same layout. The custom template is now used as the foundation for the World of Rolex series, giving Touch of Gold a consistent and scalable way to quickly publish Rolex event content with a polished, editorial feel.
